Description
Yamazakura 18 Years Old is a single malt from Sasanokawa Shuzo's Asaka distillery in Fukushima prefecture, bottled in 2018 at cask strength for the Netherlands market. Eighteen years is a serious age statement for a producer with Sasanokawa Shuzo's history, and it points to stocks laid down well before the modern Asaka distillery opened in 2016.
Matured entirely in Ex-Bourbon casks, the extended ageing gives the whisky the kind of settled, integrated character that bourbon wood develops over time: vanilla, coconut, soft dried oak and a gentle warmth on the finish. At cask strength the concentration is full, and the eighteen-year Ex-Bourbon influence is clear and unhurried. A composed expression that shows Fukushima malt at a mature, confident point.
