An unaged Madeiran rhum blanc from Engenhos do Norte, pressed from fresh roxa cane and bottled at 49%, vivid and earthy with juicy sugarcane, fresh herbs, citrus and a savoury, mineral edge.
Description
This Amphorhum white from Saint Eloi Spirits draws on Engenhos do Norte on Madeira, one of the island's historic cane mills that distils from fresh roxa cane juice in the agricole manner rather than from molasses. Unaged and bottled at a characterful 49%, it captures the raw, terroir-driven side of cane spirit, the roxa varietal lending its own twist.
The nose leads with juicy fresh sugarcane, moist and inviting, before a savoury turn brings mushroom, olive and a mineral edge alongside lychee, citrus and corn as it airs. The palate stays fresh and round, sugarcane and an earthy quality carrying through to a finish of spice, earth and citrus. This is grassy, vegetal cane spirit in its most honest form, a white built for those who like the funk and minerality of fresh-juice rum, and a lively base for a ti punch or a daiquiri that keeps the cane front and centre.
