Ron Zacapa Straight from the Cask 2005 is a higher-strength expression from Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, bottled at 45% rather than the brand's usual softer proof. Distilled on a column still and aged in ex-bourbon casks, it shows the deeper, woodier side of the Zacapa house. The character here typically runs to sweet caramel, chocolate and oak, in the rounded, dessert-leaning manner the brand is built on. The extra strength gives it more grip and presence than the entry bottlings, though it remains a sweet, smooth Guatemalan ron at heart rather than a dry, austere one, and rewards slow sipping after dinner.
