Description
Romero & Sons FRC (Kirsch Whisky) 1973 is an extraordinarily old rum from the Romero & Sons distillery in Ecuador, distilled from molasses in 1973 and bottled by Oldman Spirits as a single cask at 48 years and 56.1%. Part of a small set of barrels from this vintage, it is offered unsweetened and trades above all on its extraordinary age.
Nearly half a century in ex bourbon has built a profile dominated by wood and dark sweetness. The nose carries caramel, vanilla and chocolate over an alcoholic lift, the palate turns to dark chocolate, nuts and a rich sweetness, and the finish brings sweet cherry, prunes and a deep, oaky close. It is heavy, round and pleasantly strong, with the alcohol well integrated for its proof and a fruitier edge emerging with time. This is a bottle to approach for the age story and the chocolatey, dried fruit depth rather than for fireworks, a contemplative pour for experienced drinkers.
