A dry, wood driven single cask from Ecuador’s Romero & Sons, pot distilled and aged seventeen years in ex bourbon, leaning bitter and herbal with oak, caramel and roasted notes, a serious cask strength pour at 63.5%.
Description
This Hammerhead release comes from Flensburg Rum Company, bottled by Oldman Spirits as part of a Sea Shepherd linked range, and draws on pot still rum from Romero & Sons in Ecuador. A single cask carrying a 2005 vintage and seventeen years in ex bourbon, it is bottled unsweetened at cask strength for drinkers who want their rum dry and uncompromising.
The aroma is woody and spirit forward, with oak, confectionery sweetness and a clear alcoholic edge. The palate stays firmly in oak territory, woody and spiced with a herbal, slightly bitter streak, before a finish of caramel, baking spice and more wood. The high strength is not fully tucked away, so this rewards slow sipping with a little water, sitting closer to a dry, robust single cask in the Foursquare mould than to anything soft or sweet.
