Bottled by Hunter Hamilton for their Clan Denny grain range, this is a single cask North of Scotland distilled in 1972 and held for 37 years. The spirit comes from the lost grain distillery George Christie ran at Cambus, built inside the old Forth Brewery and closed in 1980, drawn from cask HH 5768.

Christie's broad spirit cut left more congeners in the grain than most producers allowed, and after 37 years it has reached deep oxidative maturity while holding remarkable strength. The grain has concentrated into dried fruit and a waxy weight, the ex-Bourbon American oak lending depth and structure without smothering the clean maize character beneath.

Bottled at a vigorous cask strength of 50.6%, this carries far more power than its older relatives. Vanillin from the breaking lignin gives vanilla, caramelised hemicellulose lends toffee and fudge, and coconut and cream come from the oak lactones. Slow oxidation brings old polished oak and a hint of dried fruit, the firm tannins balanced by the spirit's strength, finishing long, rich and warming. The Clan Denny range was Hunter Hamilton's grain focused line, and this cask shows exactly the kind of robust old grain it was built around.
