Description
Spirit of Rum bottled this Monymusk for the Rumclub Private Selection series, a single cask under the MMW mark from the 2020 vintage. Monymusk is the brand name for Clarendon's distillate, the central-Jamaica workhorse, and at just over four years and 64.7% this is its young, high-proof, funky face.
Matured in an ex-bourbon barrel, it pairs classic island funk with rich cask notes. Fruity, intense and spicy aromas lead, then the palate brings bourbon, ester and fruit, with dark chocolate and coffee emerging from the wood. The finish turns gluey, dry and dried-fruit-led, with the new-make bourbon barrel showing through. Certified unsweetened, it is bold and alcoholic at first and settles with air, the chocolate brightening as it opens. This is a young, value-driven Monymusk for drinkers who enjoy Hampden or Clarendon-style funk and are comfortable with cask-strength heat.
