Libra Vodka Limited Edition

Libra comes from Latvia, a country with a long Baltic vodka tradition, and this bottling is released as a Limited Edition aimed at a restrained, modern style. The work here is in the distillation and filtration: repeated passes and filtering pull out the heavier fusel oils and rougher congeners that would otherwise add harshness, leaving a particularly clear distillate. Holding it at 40% keeps a bit of structure and warmth on the palate, while the filtration is what gives the spirit its smoothness. The result is a clean grain vodka that leans on balance rather than character.

The nose is very clean and close to neutral, with fine cereal notes underneath. The palate is soft and clearly structured with a subtle spiciness, and the finish is mild, clean and long. Because it is precise rather than loud, treat it as a Martini vodka: keep the bottle in the freezer, stir hard with a dry vermouth at around five to one, and finish with a twist of lemon. The cold thickens the texture and the spirit's quiet structure lets the vermouth and citrus oils define the drink.
