Description
Koskenkorva Salmiakki is a Finnish liquorice liqueur built on the Koskenkorva spirit, distilled in the village of Koskenkorva from barley, and bottled at 30%. It captures salmiakki, the Finnish combination of sweet and salty liquorice that holds cult status across Scandinavia, in liquid form. Launched on the Finnish market in 1990, it became such a quick success that it was for a time restricted by the state alcohol monopoly, and it remains one of the better known Finnish liqueurs.
The nose is intense liquorice with salty notes, aniseed and subtle herbal hints, the palate full bodied and robust with rich salty liquorice, sweet wood and spicy nuances, finishing long, intense and harmonious with a characteristic salmiakki note. Behind the bar it brings a bold, salty liquorice character and aniseed depth, which makes it a striking modifier in a dark, spirit forward drink. It is traditionally served ice cold as a shot, where the chill lets the salmiakki unfold. Keep it cold and pour it straight from the freezer.
