Description
Killowen Oats aMaze Balls wears its mash bill in its name, oats and maize distilled into poitín at the tiny Mourne mountains site in Co. Down and bottled at a cask strength 55% for the German market, a run of just 128 bottles. The pun is the only unserious thing about it; the spirit comes off direct fire stills through worm tubs like everything else the distillery makes.
Oats bring a thick, creamy sweetness and maize a soft corn roundness, set against the green fruit and peppery bite of young spirit, with a rest in ex-bourbon wood smoothing the seams rather than ageing it toward whiskey. The result is poitín with a sense of humour and a spine, dense in texture and long in finish for something so young.
