Description
SAGALAND is that rare thing, an Irish rye, distilled at Killowen in the Mourne mountains of Co. Down in 2019 and bottled at 5 Years Old in 2024 for the German market. Single cask KD034, a Pinot Noir cask, produced 240 bottles at an undiluted 59.65%, from a distillery that runs double distillation through worm tubs over direct fire.
The Pinot Noir wood lends red fruit and a winey, tannic grip to a distillate that is anything but polite, husky grain and malt extract, old wood and an earthy, farmyard drift of smoke. It is whiskey with the rough weave of the sagas it is named for, best approached slowly, neat first, then opened with a little water to let the rye spice and red fruit spread out.
