An Pota Doubh, the black pot, is an experimental bottling of Killowen's spirit from the Mourne mountains of Co. Down, bottled at a cask strength 53% for the Austrian market in a 500ml bottle. Killowen treats unaged and young spirit as a category worth respect, running it from direct fire stills through worm tubs much as the outlaw distillers of these mountains once did.
A rest in ex-bourbon wood rounds the rawest edges without carrying it into whiskey territory, so the glass stays spirit driven, raw barley, thick cream and green fruit with a peppery burn that the full 53% keeps honest.
