Description
Barántúil, Irish for genuine, is Killowen's single pot still statement, distilled in 2019 at the tiny Mourne mountains site in Co. Down and bottled at 3 Years Old in 2022 for the Irish market. Cask KD002, a single 200 litre ex-bourbon barrel, yielded just 343 bottles at a cask strength 57.5%.
Killowen runs double distillation through worm tubs over direct fire, and its pot still mash bills typically carry a measure of peated malt, so a wisp of smoke sits behind the style's hallmarks, green apple, ginger, black pepper and the oily, waxy grip that unmalted barley brings. The single ex-bourbon barrel keeps the wood simple, vanilla and fresh oak, letting the distillate lead at full strength. Pot still whiskey the old way, from one of the smallest stillhouses in Ireland.
