Description
Karuizawa was a small single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, operated by Mercian at the foot of the active Mt. Asama volcano. It ran from 1956 until it closed in 2000 and was demolished in 2016, leaving a finite stock of maturing casks as its entire legacy. This release is a 38 Years Old single cask bottled in 2018 by Elixir Distillers for the UK market, arriving at a forthright cask strength of 62.1%.
Karuizawa was defined by its heavy use of imported Golden Promise barley and its preference for Spanish Oloroso sherry casks. This single cask reflects that tradition precisely: decades in Oloroso wood have driven the colour deep and layered in dark dried fruit, aged leather and bitter roasted notes. At 62.1% the spirit is intense but focused, a textbook example of what prolonged sherry maturation at this lost Nagano distillery could produce.
