Description
Karuizawa operated as a single malt distillery at the base of Mt. Asama in Nagano Prefecture under Mercian until its closure in 2000, with the site demolished in 2016. This bottling is a single cask from 1981, aged for 35 years and released in 2016 for the German market. The 1981 vintage is among the most documented of Karuizawa's remaining stock, with casks surfacing across markets as the supply continues to narrow.
Maturation was in Oloroso sherry wood, the dominant cask style at Karuizawa, which characteristically delivered dark fruit, chocolate and leather over decades. The flavour profile recorded for this cask includes chocolate, fragrant notes, a green-house herbaceousness and a sandy, earthy mineral quality. Bottled at 58.5% from a single cask, it carries that textural density Karuizawa developed through long sherry ageing on Golden Promise spirit.
