Description
Karuizawa 34 Years Old is a single-cask single malt from Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture, bottled by Elixir Distillers for the UK market at 58.5% cask strength from stock produced before the distillery closed in 2000. The 34-year age places this among the longer-matured expressions in the Elixir Karuizawa series, drawing on spirit that spent decades in a single Oloroso sherry butt at the Nagano site.
The flavour profile is anchored by dark chocolate and a distinctive coal-gas note, a signature of very long sherry-cask maturation on Karuizawa's richly made malt, alongside the deep sherried body that the distillery's Golden Promise base and small pot stills always generated. At 58.5% the whisky carries full presence and weight; water reveals the fruit preserve and leather beneath the coal-dark exterior. The coal-gas character in particular marks this as a long-aged expression from a serious closed site.
