Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture was a small pot still distillery that ran from 1956 until closure in 2000 under Mercian. The Belgian market release of this 1981 vintage, matured for 31 years and bottled in 2013, is drawn from an Oloroso sherry butt at 66.3% cask strength, placing it at the upper end of the strength range for Karuizawa single cask releases.

At this concentration the full force of Oloroso sherry maturation comes through directly: dense dark fruit, bitter chocolate, dried prune, cracked black pepper and aged leather, all packed into a whisky that spent three decades absorbing the character of Spanish wood. The distillery's custodians bottled it from the single butt for Belgium, an example of how carefully managed distribution extended knowledge of the closed Nagano distillery across European specialist markets.
