Description
Karuizawa distillery operated in Nagano Prefecture from 1956, distilling malt whisky at the foot of Mt. Asama until it closed in 2000 and was subsequently demolished in 2016. The distillery was notable for its small pot stills, its use of imported Golden Promise barley and its fondness for heavy sherry maturation, though its bourbon-aged casks show a lighter, fruit-forward dimension. This expression was distilled in 1982, matured for 30 years in a Bourbon Cask and bottled in 2012 by La Maison du Whisky for the French market at 58.6%.
Three decades in a single Ex-Bourbon cask built a layered profile of vanilla, dried tropical fruit and gentle cereal sweetness, with the mid-palate warmth and integration that only long Nagano ageing can produce. Released as a single cask at cask strength, the bottling represents one of the last available opportunities to encounter Karuizawa in its bourbon-matured style.
