Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture, operated by Mercian from 1956 until closure in 2000 and demolished in 2016, released many of its early 2010s bottlings through event and specialist channels as the distillery's reputation grew rapidly in the collector market. Cask number 8309, a 1981 vintage, was matured for 30 years before La Maison du Whisky selected and bottled it in 2011 for an event distribution.
The cask was a sherry butt seasoned with Oloroso, and at 30 years of age in Karuizawa's cool mountain conditions the spirit would have drawn significant sherry influence from the heavily seasoned wood. Karuizawa's house character, built on Golden Promise barley and small pot still distillation, leans toward concentrated dark fruit, leather, chocolate and warm spice in sherry casks of this age. No specific flavour notes are on record for cask 8309. Bottled at 57% cask strength.
