Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000 after decades of production under Mercian, using small pot stills and a high proportion of Golden Promise barley to create an intensely characterful single malt. This release draws on a single Oloroso sherry cask from the 1985 vintage, aged 24 years and bottled in 2009 for the German market at a natural cask strength of 60.8%.
Oloroso maturation was the defining signature of Karuizawa, and 24 years in the cask builds layers of dark plum, molasses and dried meat alongside the dried-fruit depth the distillery became celebrated for after its closure. The high ABV carries the weight well, amplifying the sherry-wood richness while preserving an earthy backbone typical of Karuizawa malt. Single cask release means no dilution and no blending, the liquid exactly as the barrel gave it.
