Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000 after a history of production stretching back to 1956. The distillery's reliance on Oloroso sherry casks was not incidental but systematic, and first fill casks at that represent the most saturated encounter between spirit and wood. This single cask from the 1990 vintage aged 22 years in a first fill Oloroso sherry cask before being bottled in 2012 at 56.1% for the UK market.

First fill sherry wood gives a deeper, more direct extract than re-fill casks, bringing rich dark cherry, espresso bitterness and molasses alongside the signature dried-fruit weight of Karuizawa malt. At 22 years the integration is full, the spirit and wood having worked together long enough that no single element dominates. The 56.1% ABV is measured and balanced for cask strength, allowing the layered complexity to unfold without the raw edge of higher fills.
