Description
Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000 and was demolished in 2016, making every remaining cask an unrepeatable artefact of the distillery's working history. This single cask from the 1991 vintage aged 21 years in an Oloroso sherry cask before being bottled in 2012 at a high 63.7% cask strength for European release.
At 63.7%, this is one of the more powerful expressions from the 1991 vintage, the natural strength amplifying the sherry-wood richness into a concentrated parade of dark plum, bitter espresso and warm, polished leather. The Golden Promise malt base and small-pot-still character give the spirit enough structure to carry that ABV without losing definition, and the full 21 years in the cask ensures the fruit and wood are fully integrated. A demanding but rewarding single cask from the closed Nagano distillery.
