Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture produced single malt whisky from 1956 until the distillery closed in 2000. Working with small pot stills and a high proportion of imported Golden Promise barley under the Mercian group, the distillery built a reputation for heavily sherried, richly textured spirit. This single cask from the 2000 vintage was bottled in 2018 for global release at 18 years of age.

The maturation vessel is an Oloroso sherry cask, placing this firmly within the mainstream of Karuizawa's production style. At a cask strength of 62.2%, the spirit carries the full weight of nearly two decades in sherry wood: dark plum, bitter chocolate, old leather and a thread of warming spice. No dilution softens the line between cask and palate, giving a direct and emphatic account of a distillery that no longer exists.
