Description
Karuizawa was a single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture that operated from 1956 until 2000, when production ceased. The site, run by Mercian and noted for its heavy use of Oloroso sherry casks and imported Golden Promise barley, was demolished in 2016. This single cask expression comes from a 2000 vintage cask, bottled in 2018 at 18 years old, selected specifically for the German market.
Matured in an Oloroso sherry cask, the bottling carries the rich, concentrated character associated with Karuizawa at full cask strength of 62.9%. Dark fruit preserve, roasted coffee and old leather frame the palate, with the sherry wood having had nearly two decades to work into the spirit. Single cask releases from this distillery are now finite, and each represents a distinct record of Karuizawa's final vintage year.
