Description
Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture was a small single malt distillery that operated from 1956 to 2000 before closing and being demolished in 2016. Known primarily for sherry maturation, the distillery also laid down stock in a range of other vessels. This single cask, number 5006, was distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2012 by Shinanoya for the Dutch market.
The maturation record shows an Ex-Bourbon cask with a Japanese wine cask finish, a combination that sets this release apart from the typical Karuizawa sherry profile. The bourbon wood contributes vanilla, light orchard fruit and a gentle cereal sweetness, while the Japanese wine cask adds a delicate fruity lift. ABV is noted at cask strength. The interplay of the two vessels and the distillery's characteristic malty base make this a distinctly different angle on Karuizawa, more delicate than its dark sherry-dominant siblings.
