Description
Karuizawa distillery was active in Nagano Prefecture from 1956 until its closure in 2000. Known for small pot stills, imported Golden Promise barley and a heavy programme of Oloroso sherry maturation, the Mercian-owned site became one of the world's most sought-after whisky sources after its demolition in 2016. This single cask from the 2000 vintage was bottled in 2015 at 15 years old, selected for release in France.
Fifteen years in an Oloroso sherry cask has given the spirit considerable depth. The sherry wood drives rich raisin and dark cherry over bitter chocolate and a leather finish characteristic of the distillery. At 62.2% cask strength, the spirit is assertive and concentrated, with the sherry influence woven throughout rather than sitting on top. A single cask record of a now-silent Nagano distillery, drawn from its final year of production.
