Karuizawa was a single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture that ran from 1956 to 2000, using small pot stills and imported Golden Promise barley under the Mercian group. Demolished in 2016, its remaining casks represent a finite and irreplaceable record of Japanese whisky history. This single cask from the 2000 vintage was selected for domestic release in Japan, bottled in 2015 at 15 years old.

Fifteen years in an Oloroso sherry cask has drawn out the deep, concentrated profile that defined Karuizawa's house character. Black cherry, dark chocolate, tobacco and aged leather build on a full, weighty palate. At 61.1% cask strength the spirit is assertive, though the years in sherry wood have smoothed the grain into something integrated and dense. A single cask from the last year of distillation at a distillery that produced some of the most individual single malt in Japan.
