Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture operated from 1956 until its closure in 2000, and the 1999 vintage is among the last distillations the site produced before falling silent. This Scotch Malt Whisky Society release, numbered 132.5, was bottled in 2013 at 14 Years Old and cask strength 58.6% for the German market, drawn from a single refill sherry butt.
The noted smoky character is unusual for Karuizawa, whose standard profile leans toward rich fruit and leather from its heavy sherry maturation programme. Here a perceptible smokiness sits alongside the dried fruit and gentle spice that the refill Oloroso cask contributes, suggesting a spirit that diverges from the distillery's typical character. The refill vessel keeps the wood influence measured rather than dominant, allowing both the smoke and the underlying malt to register clearly at 58.6%. A rare and slightly offbeat expression from the very end of Karuizawa's distilling life.
