Isle of Jura Boutique Barrels 1999

This Boutique Barrels 1999 is a hand-picked ex-Bourbon cask from one of Isle of Jura's peated runs, bottled at a cask strength 55% for the Netherlands. An outturn of 300 bottles. The distillery stands alone on the remote island of Jura, rebuilt in 1963 after six decades in ruins.

Jura mostly makes a light, unpeated malt, but late-1990s peated batches feed bottlings like this. Matured in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood frames a smoky spirit.

Bottled at its natural cask strength of 55%. The ex-Bourbon gives vanilla while guaiacol and phenols carry the smoke. The recorded notes run to a coal-gas mineral edge, smoke, a kippered note, leather, malt sweetness and a nutty depth. A smoky, hand-picked boutique Jura.
