Description
This 2021 release opened Hinch's run of beer cask experiments, an Irish blend from the Ballynahinch house finished in casks that previously held imperial stout brewed in Ireland. The base whiskey, sourced while Hinch's own Co. Down spirit matures, spends its primary maturation in ex-bourbon casks before the stout wood takes over, and the bottling was released for the European market.
The finish gives the blend a distinctly brewery character, dark chocolate and coffee grounds, dried fruit, a yeasty bread note and a slick, oily texture that carries new wood spice on the close. At 43% it stays balanced, sweet bourbon vanilla holding the roast in check. Beer cask whiskey can be a gimmick. Here the stout genuinely deepens the pour rather than merely decorating it.
