A 24 year old Clarendon bottled by High Spirits Collection from 1997, a gentler EMB-style take with plum, yellow fruit and citrus over menthol and restrained wood, finishing on spice and cappuccino, at a soft 48.9%.
Description
High Spirits Collection, an Italian independent, bottled this Clarendon distilled in 1997 at a venerable 24 years. Clarendon is Jamaica's workhorse distillery running both pot and column, and this expression shows its EMB-style spirit in a notably gentle register, a softer, more elegant side of a distillery that can be aggressive, bottled at cask strength 48.9%.
The aroma leans fruity and floral with pear, yellow fruit and a schnapps-like lift, the palate stays mild with yellow fruit, vanilla and a light feel, and the finish brings spice, cappuccino and a roasted, barrel note. Tasters catch plum, citrus and menthol with restrained wood, finding it elegant yet surprisingly light for its age, more an evening sipper than a powerhouse. Long maturation has mellowed it well, and the modest strength keeps it easy. This suits drinkers who like Jamaican character but find most Clarendons too forceful, offering the distillery's fruit and spice in a smooth, toned-down package without full-throttle intensity.
