Description
Henkell Trocken is the wine that made the Wiesbaden name, a German Sekt produced on a large scale to a consistent dry style since the late nineteenth century. It is built from an international cuvée of white grapes led by Chardonnay and Weissburgunder, fermented cool in stainless steel to hold the fruit, then given its bubble by the tank method with reserve wines blended in to keep the style even from year to year. Despite the trocken label it sits at the drier end of the German scale, closer to a Dry or Sec.
The colour is a bright, pale straw with a lively bead. Green apple, pear and citrus lead the nose over a light floral note and a touch of fresh dough, and the palate is clean, fresh and dry with a crisp, uncomplicated finish. Serve well chilled at 6 to 8 degrees as an aperitif or a party pour. It pairs with light starters, white fish, salads and lighter shellfish, and the small bottle suits a single glass on the go.
