Description
Hanyu in Saitama Prefecture closed in 2000 after producing single malt for Toa Shuzo since the early 1980s. This single cask was matured for ten years in Ex-Bourbon before completing its development in a Port Pipe, then bottled at 61.2% in 2010 for global distribution, one of the most powerful proofs in the official 2000 vintage single cask series.
Port Pipe finishing introduces a rich, concentrated red fruit character, dark cherry, plum and a warm sweetness, that sits clearly over the bourbon-derived vanilla and cereal foundation. The combination is well established in the Hanyu portfolio, where wine and fortified wine finishes were regularly used to add colour and fruit depth to a distillery character that on its own runs clean and grain-forward. At 61.2% the palate is substantial and the fruit arrives with genuine intensity.
