A young Hampden bottled at full power and finished in Oloroso, where overripe banana, pineapple and gluey ester funk meet sweet sherried marzipan and dried fruit, intense and oily at cask strength.
Description
Bottled by Spirit of Rum for the Rumclub Private Selection line, this is a single cask of CH, one of Hampden's higher ester marques from the Trelawny estate that sets the reference point for Jamaican funk. It is a pure pot still spirit, distilled from molasses on the estate's double retort stills after long wild fermentation, and it carries the house signature loud and clear even at a young age.
The spirit spent its short life in an Oloroso sherry cask, which wraps the wild banana, pineapple and nail polish esters in a layer of sweet dried fruit and nutty marzipan. The result is oily and concentrated, certified unsweetened so the sweetness is all cask and ferment rather than added sugar, and it drinks best slowly with a drop of water to open the funk. One for drinkers who already know the Hampden style and want it amped up.
