A high-ester Hampden from 2014, exploding with pineapple, overripe tropical fruit, glue and honeyed pastry, a single cask bottled by Spirit of Rum at a big, oily, dry-finishing 65.6%.
Description
Hampden of Trelawny is the loudest name in Jamaican funk, a 100% pot still distillery whose marques top out at the legal ester ceiling. This single cask from the 2014 vintage, the C and H mark, was bottled by Spirit of Rum for its Rumclub Private Selection, a line that targets exactly the drinkers who shop by high-ester intensity.
Distilled on the double-retort pot still from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon casks, it is bottled unsweetened at a forceful 65.6%. The nose erupts with pineapple, overripe tropical fruit, glue and nail polish, the palate stays funky and fruity, and a honeyed, pastry-edged sweetness carries into a dry, very long, fermented finish. The texture is notably oily and the alcohol is folded in well enough that the proof barely bites. This is big, dry, unmistakably Hampden, a benchmark pour for those who want their funk turned all the way up.
