A thirteen year Mauritian molasses rum from New Grove, easygoing at 45 percent with fruity, gourmand notes, spicy oak, mint and a warm, lightly astringent finish, a comfortable mid weight sipper rather than a grassy cane juice agricole.
Description
Grays New Grove Savoir-Faire Beau Plan 2007 is an aged rum from the New Grove range, produced by Grays at the Beau Plan site on Mauritius. Despite the agricole label classification, this is a molasses based rum, the more common feedstock across the island, and an honest reading puts it alongside approachable Indian Ocean and Barbados style sippers rather than cane juice agricole.
Distilled on a column still and matured thirteen years in ex bourbon oak, it carries fruity, floral aromatics with vanilla and wood, a palate of fruit, spice and oak with a fresh edge, and a finish that turns spicy, herbal and nutty with a touch of mint. At 45 percent it stays comfortable and flavourful, a relaxed thirteen year pour for easy sipping, with enough spicy wood to keep it interesting.
