Description
Malts of Scotland is a German independent bottler founded by Thomas Ewers, presenting numbered single casks under direct cask reference. The 50ml format used here is unusual for the firm's regular line, suggesting a tasting sized edition for distribution at festivals or events. This Glenrothes was distilled in 1982 and bottled in 2018 from cask MoS 18023 at 50.1%, with 172 bottles released globally.
Thirty six years in a refill bourbon cask produces a profile fundamentally driven by distillery character. The cask's first fill activity exhausted under previous tenancy, the wood contributes through accumulated secondary and tertiary chemistry alone: lignin's slow breakdown continues to deliver syringaldehyde and vanillin at very attenuated levels, hemicellulose's furfural has fully developed, and lactones produce coconut at minimal levels. The 50.1% strength reflects long evaporation in dry warehousing across nearly four decades.
On the nose, an unusual coal gas note sits alongside a medicinal lift signalling deep tertiary chemistry from the cask's accumulated interactions. Hay barn warmth threads through with fresh apple, honey and a faint vanilla pod underneath. The palate runs honeyed and gentle through cooked pear and lemon curd, the 50.1% strength delivering preserved spirit character with minimal cask interference. The finish is long, soft and lingering, the cask's exhausted tannin signature leaving the spirit's accumulated character clearly framed.
