Description
Sansibar's Spirits Shop' Selection is one of the German indie's themed labels, distinct from the White Label, Clans Label and other ongoing lines. Sansibar was founded in 2008 and named after the legendary Sylt beachfront bar, operating multiple themed bottling programmes alongside its standard releases. This Glenrothes 22 Years Old, distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2018 at 52.4% from Oloroso casks, was vatted across 504 bottles for the German market.
Twenty two years in Oloroso casks sits in the rich middle window for sherry maturation moving toward long extractive territory. The casks' first fill activity remains in late stage extraction with European oak's tannin contribution matured into structure rather than aggression. The residual Oloroso sherry residue has fully integrated through accumulated cask interaction, while lignin's breakdown delivers vanillin and syringaldehyde alongside hemicellulose's furfural chemistry. The cask's sotolon contributes the savoury walnut depth characteristic of well aged Oloroso.
On the nose, raisin and fig sit with polished oak underneath, the casks' developed sherry signature clearly forward. The palate moves through dark chocolate, dried prune and a developing leathery quality, the 52.4% strength delivering the cask's accumulated chemistry without astringency. The finish runs long and gently tannic, European oak holding the spirit's Speyside fruit in tight balance against the cask's oxidative depth.
