    Rare Old
    700ml / 46%
    Single Malt

    $1089

Gordon and MacPhail, the Elgin grocer laying down casks on South Street since 1895, bottled this Glenesk, a 34 year old, at 46%. Light and gently oily, with apple, pear and honey. Most of its make went to blends, above all William Sanderson’s Vat 69. Known over its life as Highland Esk, North Esk, Montrose, Hillside and finally Glenesk. This is a rare malt from a closed Highland distillery.

A 34 year old Glenesk from Gordon and MacPhail, distilled in 1979, from cask RO/13/04, at 46%, one of 238 bottles. Glenesk was a Highland single malt distilled at Montrose, in the valley of the Esk. It took the name Glenesk only in 1980, a few short years before it closed for good. Drum maltings added in 1968 outlived the distillery and are working still.

Run slowly off the spirit still, for the light, malty make Glenesk was known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the American oak lending vanilla and a light honey. Ethereal and fragile, the decades draw it to a honeyed, waxy delicacy of tropical fruit and old oak. A light, gently oily texture from the spirit carries through the maturation. With the distillery long closed, these are casks that can never be filled again. Active wood frames the malt without ever crowding the light Highland spirit. Years in oak deepened the spirit to gold, the body growing rounder with time.

At 46% it is fruity, creamy and soft. Apple, pear and a gentle honey, lifted by a soft oak. Soft pear and a light honey sit behind the cask. A medium finish carries a soft honey. This is a rare, honeyed Highland single malt.
