Description
This is cask RC 1066 in Glendalough's Madeira Cask Finish series, a single cask Irish single malt bottled for the wider European market in an edition of 500. Glendalough operates from Co. Wicklow in the bonder tradition, sourcing mature Irish malt and applying its own cask programme, an honest revival of the way most Irish whiskey reached drinkers before the brands took over.
Maturation began in Ex-Bourbon American oak before the whiskey moved into a Madeira cask to finish. Expect orange peel, sultana and honeyed malt over a base of vanilla and gentle oak, with the wine cask adding a nutty, softly oxidative warmth through the finish. At 42% it stays approachable, the classic orchard fruit and honey of Irish single malt given a Madeiran accent by the valley of the two lakes.
