Description
Part of Glendalough's Single Cask series, this blended Irish whiskey was matured in an ex-bourbon barrel and then finished in a cask that previously held Calvados XO, the long aged apple brandy of Normandy. It is single cask 7/7 CLVHH19, bottled in 2020 for the Netherlands at 42%, an edition of 456 bottles.
Calvados wood is a natural partner for Irish whiskey and an unusual one to actually meet, feeding baked apple and orchard blossom into the spirit's own fruit. This cask leans fresh rather than heavy, citrus zest, crisp green apple and pear, a leafy, faintly herbal note and light vanilla from the bourbon barrel underneath. The gentle strength keeps it bright, an aperitif style of Irish whiskey with the orchard running from nose to finish.
