Cask 1/12 CX18 opened Glendalough's 2018 series of Calvados XO finishes, blended Irish whiskey bottled that year for the European market in an edition of 366 bottles. The Wicklow company sources its whiskey and concentrates on the casks, and pairing Irish spirit with barrels that held long aged Norman apple brandy has become one of its signatures.
Matured first in an ex-bourbon barrel, the whiskey shows honey, vanilla and fresh orchard fruit as its base, and the Calvados finish folds in baked apple, new wood spice and a late curl of chocolate. Bottled at 42%, it keeps the profile bright and gently sweet without turning sugary, the apple running right through to a finish of soft spice and toasted oak.
