The Wicklow company Glendalough operates as a modern whiskey bonder, sourcing mature Irish malt and shaping it through unusual casks, and it was the first Irish name to use Japanese Mizunara oak. Cask 3/10 of the 17 Years Old carries that idea at real age, a single cask bottled in 2019 for the Netherlands, 652 bottles at 46%.
Seventeen years in ex-bourbon barrels built a foundation of vanilla, honeycomb and baked apple before the whiskey moved into Mizunara oak for its finish. The Japanese wood is scarce, hard to cooper and generous with aroma, adding sandalwood, temple incense and coconut over gentle baking spice. The result reads as classic aged Irish malt through an unexpected lens, soft and orchard sweet at heart with a perfumed, spiced tail that lingers well past the last sip.
