Description
A Glencraig of a 24 year old chosen by Gordon and MacPhail, distilled in 1970, at 40%. Glenburgie is a Speyside single malt, this a heavier, oilier make than its light house style. The Lomond stills, with adjustable plates in the neck, gave a fuller, oilier spirit. It has been a core malt of the Ballantine's blend since Hiram Walker bought it in 1936.
The spirit was distilled to a fuller, oilier cut, for a thick, waxy spirit unlike the light house style. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the American oak lending vanilla and a light honey. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend structure while oxidation builds a richer tropical fruit over a candle wax depth. A soft waxiness from the spirit carries a thread through the maturation. The spirit deepens with time, the cask drawing out a soft beeswax. First fill wood drives the maturation, the cask clear in the spirit.
Reduced to 40%, it is mellow and fragrant. A heavier, fruity sweetness with a waxy depth, with a gentle oak sweetness. The body is fuller and oily, the fruit wrapped in wax. A rich finish closes on apple and a deep beeswax. This is a deep, oily Speyside single malt.
