Description
Gordon and MacPhail, the Elgin grocer laying down casks on South Street since 1895, bottled this Glencadam, distilled in 1991, at 46%. Glencadam is a gentle, fruity Highland malt of orchard and tropical fruit. Most of its make long went to blends; bottled single malt Glencadam was rare until a full range arrived. Its water comes from Loch Lee in the Cairngorms, piped down through the River Esk catchment. It was founded in 1825 by the merchant George Cooper, soon after the Excise Act made licensed distilling viable. It is the only distillery in Angus, and the last in Brechin since North Port closed in 1983.
Distilled from unpeated malt, for a creamy, fruity make with real elegance. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanillin and a soft coconut under the malt. Into oxidative maturity, slow air builds tropical esters of mango and pineapple over a creamy depth. A soft, creamy texture from the spirit carries through the maturation.
At 46% it is smooth and fruity. Pear, melon and a light barley note, lifted by a soft oak. The mouthfeel is light and creamy, carrying the fruit. The finish runs delicate, fruity and creamy. This is Glencadam's creamy, fruity Highland character.
