Description
This Glenburgie comes from Signatory Vintage, the Edinburgh house that bottles at Edradour above Pitlochry, a 25 year old, distilled in 1995, from cask 6528 + 6582, at 54.7%, one of 383 bottles. Glenburgie is a Speyside single malt, a blending malt rarely seen on its own and largely the work of independents. It has been a core malt of the Ballantine's blend since Hiram Walker bought it in 1936.
It was distilled in tall onion shaped pot stills, building a light malt of orchard fruit and fresh grass. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the fresh, fruity character to the fore. Through the evaporative decades the esters fold into mango, beeswax and a waxy honey. Maturation runs slow and even in the cool Speyside warehouses. Active wood frames the fruit without ever crowding the Speyside spirit. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit.
At its natural 54.7% it is full and fruity. Pear, honey and a creamy oak, with a gentle oak sweetness. Soft apple and a waxy honey sit behind the cask. The finish is light, fruity and clean. This is a fruity Speyside malt rarely seen on its own.
