Description
Signatory Vintage bottled this Glenburgie, a 24 year old, distilled in 1995, from cask 6, at 47.1%, one of 763 bottles. Glenburgie is a Speyside single malt, owned by Chivas Brothers and one of the larger Speyside distilleries. Its make has long fed big blends like Old Smuggler down the decades. It was founded in 1810 as Kilnflat by William Paul, taking the Glenburgie name in 1878.
Distilled from unpeated malt, building a light malt of orchard fruit and fresh grass. It was matured in an Oloroso cask, the wood working into the fruity malt. Through the evaporative decades the esters fold into mango, beeswax and a waxy honey. Maturation runs slow and even in the cool Speyside warehouses. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit. A soft waxiness from the spirit carries a thread through the maturation.
Bottled at a cask strength 47.1%, it is concentrated. Apple, pear and fresh cut grass, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The mouthfeel is light, a faint waxiness carrying the fruit. It finishes light, fresh and faintly waxy. This is Glenburgie's bright, orchard led Speyside character.
