Description
This Glenburgie comes from Signatory Vintage, the Edinburgh house that bottles at Edradour above Pitlochry, a 22 year old, distilled in 1995, from cask 6518, at 60%, one of 218 bottles. Glenburgie is a clean, fruity Speyside malt, light and fresh in the glass. It has been a core malt of the Ballantine's blend since Hiram Walker bought it in 1936.
It was distilled in tall onion shaped pot stills, building a light malt of orchard fruit and fresh grass. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the American oak lending vanilla and a light honey. Through the evaporative decades the esters fold into mango, beeswax and a waxy honey. Active wood frames the fruit without ever crowding the Speyside spirit. Built for the blender's art, the make ages with quiet grace as a single malt. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit. First fill wood drives the maturation, the cask clear in the spirit.
Bottled at a cask strength 60%, it is concentrated. Baked apple, grass and a light honey, lifted by a soft oak. A green apple and a gentle citrus lift the middle. The finish is rounded, fruity and clean. This is Glenburgie's bright, orchard led Speyside character.
