Description
Cadenhead bottled this Glen Spey, a 17 year old, distilled in 2001, at 53.3%, one of 546 bottles. Glen Spey is a Speyside single malt, long a quiet backbone of the J and B blend. It is one of five distilleries in the whisky town of Rothes, in the heart of Speyside. Most of its spirit goes to blends; single malt Glen Spey is rare, and largely the work of independents. Under Gilbey it took the Glen Spey name and supplied the house Spey Royal blend. It sits below the ruins of Castle Rothes, once the seat of the Earls of Rothes.
The spirit was distilled from unpeated malt, the purifiers paring it back to a light, grassy core. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the gentle American oak letting the spirit lead. Into oxidative maturity, slow air builds fruity esters of apple and a light tropical note over a nutty depth. A light oiliness carries a waxy thread through the long, slow maturation.
At a natural 53.3% it is full and nutty. Fresh grass, pear and a creamy almond, lifted by a soft oak. A green apple and a gentle spice lift the middle. The finish runs delicate, grassy and dry. This is a grassy Speyside malt of real delicacy.
