Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 7 year old, from 2013, cask 875, at 56.1%, 260 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
Drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, for a briny, oily make of salt, citrus and a salted toffee. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the oily spirit. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the spirit fresh, oily and coastal. Years in oak round the spirit, the brine and citrus deepening to a salted toffee. The Glen was added to the Scotia name around 1930, the distillery dating to 1832. A former owner, Duncan MacCallum, drowned in the loch that fed the distillery, and is said to haunt it. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle.
At cask strength 56.1% it is full bodied. An oily, salted sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a soft oak give it depth. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is an oily, coastal malt from the Kintyre coast.
